What Makes You So Special?
On-Page 101:SEO Basics
On-page search engine optimization is a fairly complex process that is used to help a website rank higher up in search engine results. In order to increase their rankings, a web designer will optimize their website to suit the desires of web crawlers (or “spiders” – hence the name world wide web). This often involves multiple alterations to a website, especially if the site wasn’t built with SEO in mind. Being that the crawlers can only read text, the quality of the content and use of targeted keywords is crucial to your chance of ranking in the top results. Whenever possible it is best to carefully choose the desired search strategy and properly optimize your website before launching any link building campaign. Since there’s actually quite a lot to fully optimizing a website, let’s just talk a little about the basics.
Keywords
The very first part of SEO that you should consider with on-page optimization is selecting your target keywords. These are words or phrases that a person may search for in a search engine, that will allow you to direct traffic to your website when those precise phrases are searched for. Coming up with a keyword can be a very difficult process. It is vital that a webmaster chooses the best keywords to ensure that they receive a large amount of traffic, while still having the most likely chance of ranking in the top results.
One technique that has proven quite effective when choosing keywords is to go with long tail keywords (or short phrases). These keywords are not extremely popular, as they are not commonly searched for, but they do not have a high amount of competition. This ensures that you receive a major portion of the traffic from that keyword, rather than dividing it up with other websites.
Once a webmaster has a keyword picked out they must place it in their content. Seems easy enough, right? Well, not quite. The web designer now has to decide how often the keyword will appear throughout their content. This is known as keyword density – the percentage amount that a certain keyword takes up in a website’s content. Different search engines like a different amount of keyword density, however Google is by far the most popular search engine. And Google is said to like a keyword density ratio of about 5%, so that is about how much you may want use with each keyword.
Title Tags
Excluding the content on a website itself, title tags are perhaps the single most important part of on-page SEO. Title tags are used to describe a document in a concise manner. Title tags should be keyword-rich, but still need to make sense and sound interesting for when people actually visit the website. The maximum amount of characters that should be in a title tag is 70, and no more than that. It also has been shown that the closer to the beginning of a title tag that the keyword of choice is, the better.
Conclusion

All this may seem like a lot, but when you take it one step at a time you will find that it becomes much easier. This is just the tip of the iceberg, as there are dozens of SEO techniques that web designers use for on page web design. SEO is very competitive, so new web designers should be prepared to start out unsuccessful. In this type of marketing, it is best to learn from your mistakes. After finding where you went wrong with SEO, improve it so that your website can rank higher up. Your goal should be to at least put your website on the first page of search engine results, as a majority of people will not even venture onto the second or third page of the rankings. Keep trying and improving on what you already have, you will eventually get there. Search engine optimization is a process, and this is just the first step.
Professional Link Building Advice
It’s February which means it’s time for yet another search algorithm update (and a Page Rank update to go along with it). So seeing as how I’m always eager to discover what’s next for the world of SEO as well as Mr Link Builder, I was pleasantly surprised to run a quick ranking report and find that this site has now achieved top rankings! I’m currently enjoying #1 rankings for the term “Professional Link Building Advice” and a handful of other words and phrases that I won’t mention to avoid unnecessary keyword stuffing (hehe):
So how did this happen you ask? Well, to put it simply, just a little bit of work and a lot of link love from other relevant site owners (maybe like yourself;-). In reality it just took a few hours of free link building and some very basic directory submissions to provide the search engines with the information they needed in order to know and understand what this site is all about. Through targeted anchor text and quality inbound links, I’ve successfully provided the equation that is search with the elements they look at to determine which website has the most relevant and useful content on a subject matter. That’s it! And there’s your pro link builder advice for the day.

Cloud Computing and SEO in 2012
Where Is Cloud Computing Headed in 2012?
Cloud computing was one of the biggest trends in computing during 2011, and it will continue to grow in popularity and buzz during 2012. A very popular niche in the world of link building and SEO for 2011, this new form of computing involves loading all of your data onto a public storage space, known as the cloud, so it can be accessed quickly from any internet connection. It transfers the load of computing and storage from single computers or large server banks to a more decentralized and less physical form. As cloud computing grows in 2012, certain cloud company trends are sure to emerge.
Focus On Security
Unexpected breaches into the cloud last year will have companies ratcheting up their security over the next 12 months. Hackers are aiming at these services because they represent big hauls with less work. Hacking into a physical server takes weeks or months, but accessing a data stream is much easier.
Acceptance Among Organizations
While social networks are a very visible example of cloud computing, 2012 will see many organizations and companies adopting the system as well. Groups that deal with large amounts of information, such as hospitals and court houses, benefit greatly from centralized data storage.
Re-Coding
Much like when the first dual-core processors became available, current programs have a hard time taking full advantage of the cloud. Cloud company coders will need to work hard this year to encourage new coding techniques. As programs move closer to full cloud integration user acceptance will rise.
Development Of Cloud Brokerage Firms
There are hundreds of companies offering cloud computing services, with most specializing in one or two types of data management. A large corporation might work with 5 or 10 different companies just to manage all of their human resources, sales and client information. To save these companies time, brokerage firms are emerging that create all-in-one packages for companies, combining separate services into a single account.
Cloud Computing and SEO
So what does cloud computing mean for SEO and why is it important to be in the know on this new form of online storage? Well, simply put, it’s much like the smart phone revolution. There’s a good chance your competition is already marketing their new technologically advanced business services and not doing your part to optimize your online business could end up costing you more than you might think. Sure you can continue to conduct business as usual and you may not feel the effect of not having the technology over the next several months. But in time you will surely see a massive push towards “the cloud” (as is being seen with a number of top computer brands like Macintosh and Microsoft already offering cloud storage) and not taking full advantage of this information now could leave you months, if not years, behind the competition. So get your head out of the clouds and start storing your files and business data in it instead! When you’re the obvious choice over your competitors, you’ll be glad you did.
Content is King! (Freshness Update)

It’s been awhile since my last post and I’ve been planning on adding an article on the importance of quality content. So it was obvious after last week’s “Freshness” update that now was a better time than ever before to touch on what makes good content and why it’s important to your search marketing campaign.
The latest reports are saying that somewhere around 35 percent of the search results were affected by the change. While primarily an extension of 2010′s Caffeine update, the newly revised search engine algorithm aims to provide end users with more current and updated content. The idea is that some of the older, outdated content in place on well established high ranking domains will no longer dominate the SERPs.
A number of newer websites have already benefited from the Freshness update. Mr Link Builder being one of them, I’m now enjoying PR2 status and increased search rankings for a number of keywords.
So what does this all mean to your website? Well, it simply means that if you haven’t already, you should update your site and/or start a blog page if you don’t already have one. I’ve even seen a couple of sites gain authority from simply adding a Twitter feed to help generate fresh content. Not exactly the best way to develop original content, but an interesting strategy none the less.
Many SEO professionals have long known that hosting quality ORIGINAL content is a major advantage to any search marketing campaign. Your content can not only help you gain rankings for additional keywords and topics you may not have otherwise been found for, but it can also help to build a solid foundation of RSS readers and followers of your site who are interested in seeing what other useful information your future postings may provide them. By offering lots of original content, you encourage the search engines and visitors alike to check back frequently on your website.
Some internet marketing companies have already taken the idea to the next level by offering to create and distribute content as part of an ongoing SEM campaign. This newly created content is being dispersed among relevant websites as a new form of link building and can often be of much more value to an individual site owner than just hosting a single link. By offering fresh content to the publisher, you can not only help provide an additional means of search visibility, but also help a website to entice readers with fresh and original information for regular visitors.
In closing I will just say this…
Search Engine Optimization is merely a matter of opinion. With ongoing updates to the algorithm and search marketing professionals constantly voicing their personal opinions on the changes, no one but the search engine employees themselves are in the know of what works and what doesn’t. Everything else is simply trial and error. A game which to me makes SEO one of the most intriguing and inspiring industries to be involved with. There are a few companies out there that have done a great job of testing these theories and I give thanks to them for all of the hard work and research they do to ensure that the rest of us can keep up with the search evolution.
What is Page Rank?
If you know anything about SEO or link building, you’ve probably heard somebody mention the term PageRank (or PR). But what is it and why does it matter?
I did a quick Google search for “What is PageRank?” and the top result does give a fairly in depth definition (as well as some other interesting facts about PageRank). But unless you’re a SEO nerd or maybe a Stanford graduate, you might have a hard time seeing through the technical data and obscure lingo.
Perhaps a more simple concept for understanding Page Rank would be to say that it is sort of like a website’s Grade or Score on a scale of 0 to 10. It’s the level of authority assigned to a website by Google using a mathematical equation to determine how much power and trust a website has in it’s relative market.
Google’s been using it’s algorithm since 1998 to deliver what it supposed to be the most relevant results to it’s search engine users. PageRank is one of the major factors used to help determine these results.
As it relates to link building, a site’s PR helps to assign a value that can be given to any outbound link. A website with a PR1 will obviously not have as much link juice to share as a site with a PR10. However, the amount of authority give by a site’s PR is also effected by the number of outbound links being used on the particular page containing the PR.
For example: If a PR4 page is linking to 100 external sources, and a similar PR3 page contains only 5 outbound links, you could safely assume that the PR3 page probably has more link juice to give off based on the amount of outbound links having to share the juice being significantly lower. WebWorkshop has done a great job of breaking this down even further.
So in terms of building quality inbound links and establishing trust with the search engines, PR plays a pretty big part in what links will provide the most juice and help increase a website’s search rankings.
In the search engine optimization industry today however, many SEO professionals and webmasters are starting to steer away from using PR to find quality links. While Page Rank may be determined by a number of factors (such as domain age, content relevancy, and traffic), one of the main concerns with PR is that it can be effected by the inbound links being pointed to a site, and can therefor assign value or a false sense of trust that is not truly being earned by the search engines. Examples of this are sites with re-purposed domains (domains that have been purchased and are reusing with the previous owners links) or low quality sites that contain a few high PR links that are shedding their authority to make the linked site appear to be more trustworthy.
In closing, regardless of what many search professionals will tell you, PageRank is still an important aspect of link building in 2011 and although it may soon become less of a consideration by the search engines, you can count on most websites using their PR as a means of value when conducting link building and advertising arrangements.

What is Link Building?
For my first post, I figured I’d talk a little about the basics of link building and why it is so important.
In today’s electronically charged society, where the average city dweller has a smart phone or tablet and relies so heavily on their technology that without it they could actually end up lost on the highway without a single phone number to call for help, the internet is truly the matrix that holds our world together. In fact, many of the latest technologies in communications depend on the internet in order to be able to function at all. So you can be sure that the web isn’t going away anytime soon and thus neither is the World of Search.
The search engines currently control a vast majority of all e-commerce and social market trends through the algorithm determined results that they deliver to the end user. With these algorithms being altered and tweeked on a regular basis, it’s no surprise that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) companies and online ad agencies are in business and still thriving during the tough economical times that we live in. The need for constant SEO analysis and on-going updates in order to maintain top organic search rankings makes hiring a SEO firm almost a necessity for many enterprise level businesses. And with some niche markets conducting almost all of their business online, there are likely a number of similar brands competing for the same search engine success. Since only so much can be done to a site’s on-page optimization, one of (if not) the most important and effective methods for improving rankings is through high quality link building.
But…What is link building? The simplest way to explain external links that I’ve heard is to consider them kind of like votes. They’re essentially one site voting for another site. So link building is the process of finding and placing additional incoming links to one’s website, ultimately creating a large backlink portfolio of quality related websites that are “voting” for the site. Not only do these links help establish web presence by click-thru traffic and search engine backtracking, but they can also give the search engines an additional way to determine a site’s relevancy and authority by using a particular “anchor text” or keyword/phrase as hyper-linked content as opposed to direct URL’s or traditional banner and image links.
I’ll give an example of how this relates to search rankings:
Let’s just say hypothetically that we have two sites who’s on page SEO and site metrics are 100% equal with the only variable being each sites backlink portfolio. While both sites will most likely rank for the same keywords, one site must outrank the other in order for the search engines to deliver the most systematically relevant result. This is done by analyzing a sites inbound links. If site A has 100 inbound links – 10 of which are using the anchor text “travel”, and site B has 100 inbound links – but only 2 using the anchor “travel”, it would make sense that site A with 10 “travel” text links would be the more authoritative result on the topic.
Unfortunately it’s not quite that simple as there are a number of other factors (i.e. Page Rank, outbound link count, relevancy, link placement, etc.) that effect the amount of power or “link juice” and the end result that each link produces. I’ll talk more about that later.
Hopefully, this has provider some basic insight into link building and what it’s all about. I’ve barely scratched the surface of this topic here, so be sure to check out some of my later posts for even more information and tips on building links and search engine marketing.

Let’s first talk about a general understanding of a website’s internal link structure. The two basic types of links in a website’s source code are internal links and external links. Internal links would be those pointing to other web pages within the site itself. And an external link is of course then a link pointing to another, external website or URL. So when we talk about link building we are always referring to the external links of a website. These are essentially the “votes” used by the algorithm to determine a site’s authority and trust.
